Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach is often referred to as one long beach but it is actually a bunch of beaches including from ewa (west) side of Waikiki to the Diamond Head side (east): Waikiki Beach, Prince Kuhio Beach, Queen’s Surf Beach, Kapiolani Beach, and Kaimana Beach. Waikiki Beach was a retreat for Hawaiian royalty in the 1800s who enjoyed surfing there on early forms of longboards called Kiko'o  - 15 feet or longer for Hawaiian Royalty only. Olympic gold medalist Duke Kahanamoku, the "Father of Modern Surfing" was born and raised in Waikiki and helped to make the sport popular not only in Hawai'i in the early 1900's but introduced surfing to the rest of the world.
